Tato sbírka je založena za účelem pomoci nemocné Aleně a jejím dvěma kočičkám Bertíkovi a Else překlenout nejnáročnějšího období po úmrtí milovaného manžela Shanea, talentovaného spisovatele a velkého milovníka kočiček, a po závažném úraze Aleny. Účelem této sbírky je pomoc s výdaji spojenými s úmrtím manžela, a finanční pomoc Aleně, která je vážně nemocná (od 14 let trpí epilepsií se záchvaty, které se nedaří kontrolovat medikací), a navíc je nyní po važném úraze nohy způsobeném lodním šroubem (má za sebou tři operace).

EN: This fundraiser was started in order to help Alena and her two cats, Albert and Elsa, after the death of Alena’s beloved husband Shane. As Alena suffers from epilepsy and other health issues, she has been unable to work since November 2021. Furthermore, in June she had a serious foot injury caused by a boat propeller (she has had three surgeries so far). Therefore, the donated money will be used to cover expenses related to her husband’s death and living expenses, as well as necessary healthcare for Alena.

Se Shanem se poznali v únoru roku 2012, a ačkoliv je od sebe dělilo půl světa (Česká republika – Nový Zéland), po dvou letech jejich přátelství přerostlo v lásku. A tak se na jaře 2015 Shane přestěhoval za Alenou do Evropy. O rok později měli nádhernou maličkou svatbu v podzemních prostorech strahovského areálu. Společně se zrzavým Albertem (a následně i kočičkou Elsou) žili ve třech různých zemích a překonávali všechny překážky, které jim život díky nemocné Aleně přichystal.
Ta nejtěžší přišla v listopadu roku 2021, kdy Alena začala trpět na nevysvětlitelné neurokognitivní problémy a výrazně se jí zhoršila epilepsie. Každodenní záchvaty, často několikrát po sobě, bolesti celého těla, rozkousaný jazyk a vyčerpání, které epilepsii doprovází… Ale to nebylo vše. Alena najednou nebyla schopná mluvit v souvislostech, její řeč nedávala žádný smysl, nemohla si vybavit slova a dát je dohromady do smysluplné věty, nerozuměla tomu, co jí ostatní říkali. Nedovedla jít rovně a motala se, začala mít problémy s jemnou motorikou, neudržela tužku, občas ani hrneček… Zapomínala věci, které se staly den předtím, nebo si je pamatovala úplně špatně. Občas měla také jasné vzpomínky na to, co se nikdy nestalo. Neviděla předměty, které byly přímo před ní, a mozek nebyl vůbec schopný porozumět tomu, co se kolem ní dělo. Dostavily se občasné halucinace. Na několik měsíců dokonce i ztratila schopnost číst a psát, spočítat základní matematické úkony jako 5+4… Prospala někdy celý den, jako hadrová panenka.

Osm měsíců strávila po nemocnicích, s mnohými lékaři, kteří se snažili její epilepsii a všechny ostatní potíže dostat lépe pod kontrolu. Žádná kombinace léků však neměla efekt, a ohledně těch dalších problémů bylo podezření na prodělané minimrtvičky, případně encefalitidu (znáte film “Mozek v plamenech”? Symptomy na ni z 99% seděly). Podstupovala také terapie a kognitivní tréninky pro zlepšení mozkových funkcí – testy totiž ukazovaly, že je 2 až 2.5 standardní odchylky od normy, co se týče paměti, schopnosti plánovat, třídit a rozumět informacím. Laicky řečeno, výsledky testů odpovídající hodnotám, jaké jsou u lidí se začínající demencí či Alzheimerem.
Shane zůstal sám se svou prací spisovatele a kočičkami. Kvůli covidovým opatřením mohli být ve spojení pouze telefonem nebo občas přes skype, což bylo však dost náročné kvůli Aleniným problémům s komunikací – to stejné se zprávami, na které byl často i autocorrect krátký. Její zdravotní stav jí výrazně zhoršil také psychiku, bojovala se silnými depresemi.
Závěry lékařů – víc udělat nemůžeme, nevíme. S takovým případem jsme se ještě nesetkali. Asi to bude potřebovat hodně času, ergoterapie, zkoušet vhodnější kombinace léků, mozková cvičení, a trpělivost.
EN: Shane and Alena started emailing in February 2012, and even though they lived on the other sides of the world, within two years of talking their friendship turned into love. In 2015, Shane moved to Europe so they could be together. A year later we got married in a lovely dark underground labyrinth under Strahov in Prague. They got a ginger cat Albert and together they lived in three different countries, overcoming all obstacles that life threw their way.
The most difficult one came in November 2021, when Alena started suffering from unexplained neurocognitive problems and her epilepsy got completely out of control, not responding to any medication. Seizures every day, often multiple times, body completely exhausted, no strength, bitten tongue, headaches that accompany seizures… But that was not all. She was unable to speak, her speech made no sense, she couldn’t recall the right words and put them together into a coherent sentence, she didn’t understand what others were telling her… Alena was unable to walk straight, and she started having problems with soft motor skills – holding a pen, or even a mug… She would forget things that happened the day before, remember them completely wrong or had clear memories of things that never happened. She couldn’t see objects that were right in front of her, and the brain was unable to make sense out of what was going on around her. Occasional hallucinations. For a couple of months Alena even lost the ability to read and write, calculate the most basic things like 5+4… Sometimes all she could do was to sleep all day.
Alena spent 8 months in different hospitals, with doctors trying to get her epilepsy and other health issues under control. But no medications had any effect, and regarding the other problems – doctors suspected that she had either experienced ministrokes or had encephalitis (do you know the movie “Brain on Fire”? The symptoms were 99% totally her). She also underwent therapy and cognitive trainings in order to improve her brain functions – as tests were repeatedly coming back as bad, and all different aspects were 2 to 2.5 standard deviation from the normal values – regarding memory, ability to plan, sort out information and understand things. Basically, her brain was showing results that you see in people with early Alzheimers or early stage of dementia.
Shane had to stay home alone with the cats and his writing. Due to covid restrictions, Shane couldn’t visit Alena in hospital – they talked on phone and skype, but it was problematic because of Alena’s problems with communication. And texting, typing was a problem too, even autocorrect couldn’t really fix the typos and mistakes. Her health condition and no clear answers from the doctors also took a toll on Alena’s mental health, and she was diagnosed with major depressive disorder.
Conclusions from doctors: we can’t do more for you, we just don’t know. We have never seen a case like this here before. It will probably just take a lot of time, ergotherapy, trying more different combinations of meds, cognitive training, and patience.
Shane byl Alenky velkou oporou, nejlepším přítelem, její spřízněnou duší, nevyčerpatelnou inspirací a nadějí. Důvodem, proč to nevzdávala. Když byla z nemocnic propuštěna do domácího léčení (její stav se mírně zlepšoval – hlavně řeč, orientace, motorické schopnosti, a už neupadala do velkých záchvatů s bezvědomím tak často), přišla ta nejkrutější životní událost. Její milovaný Shane, který se o ni 24hod denně staral, podporoval ji a přivolával pomoc, když nastal větší záchvat, náhle zemřel, a Alena je naprosto zlomená a ztracená.
Má moc velkou snahu zapojit se zase do normálního života jako předtím (snaží se chodit na všechna lékaři doporučená cvičení a ergoterapie pro zlepšení jejích funkcí, která si musí hradit sama) a moc ráda by se zase vrátila i do pracovního procesu. Zatím ale díky svému zdravotnímu stavu musí zůstat doma s kočičkami. Vyčerpala už veškerou možnou pomoc a úspory, nyní se ocitla v těžké situaci bez finančních prostředků (tím, že její muž byl cizinec, neměl české občanství a žili v zahraničí, nemá nárok na žádnou dávku).
V červnu měla Alena vážný úraz nohy, lodní šroub jí utrhl jeden sval a zlomil čtyři kosti, přeťal několik šlach.. má za sebou tři operace, a stále nemůže na noze ani stát. Ve specializovaném centru nedávno začala pětitýdenní rehabilitační program s nadějí, že intenzivní fyzioterapie a další rehabilitační strategie pomohou navrátit funkci nohy a mobilitu.
Sbírka Aleně pomůže bojovat dál a být více soběstačná.
EN: Shane was Alena’s rock, her support person, best friend and her soul mate, source of endless inspiration and hope. The reason why she didn’t give up. Not long after she was released from hospitals and started outpatient treatment, the worst things happened. Her beloved Shane passed away and now that he’s gone, Alena feels completely broken and lost.
She is determined to try go back to normal life (she goes to many doctor appointments, all day long intense rehabilitations and ergotherapy sessions that she has been recommended in order to improve her neurocognitive functions, even though it is not covered by health insurance), and she would like to go back to work again too.
We are turning to you and ask for your help as Alena is now still unable to go back to work. She has used up all the savings and is in financial need (she is also not eligible for any benefits as her husband didn’t have Czech citizenship and they lived in a foreign country).
In June, she suffered a boat propeller accident when her foot slipped. One of her muscles got torn away, four bones got broken and three tendons were cut in halves. She has had three surgeries, still can't even stand on the foot and she is enrolled in an intense all-day rehabilitation program, hoping thois will help restore functions of the foot.
The fundraiser will help Alena keep fighting and be more self-sufficient.
Bertík a Elsa jsou zlaté kočičky, a snaží se ji každý den přesvědčit, že musí jít dál, bojovat s nemocí a nepřízní osudu, a že je nemůže nechat samotné…. Aby Albertovi a Elsince mohla udržet domov a aspoň ten zbytek kočičí rodiny, kterou původně byli (a měli ještě dlouhá léta být). Aby mohli i nadále společně prožívat hezké momenty. I přes to, že Alena zůstala na vše sama, jsou jí kočičky velkou oporou a hlavní radostí v životě.
