We are Spolek mediků – the Medic´s Society and we would like to raise funds to build a memorial to the body donors.
We strive to become GPs, surgeons, neurologists or orthopaedists. But whatever our specialty in the future, the common basis of our studies is anatomy. For some, a scare, but for all, a gateway to becoming a good doctor and a humble human being.
Although today we have technology and teaching tools that could only be dreamed of a generation ago, nothing replaces learning on actual human bodies that give us first-hand experience of how bones and organs are arranged in the body or where blood vessels and nerves run.
You're probably wondering how we get these bodies…
While the possibility of donating blood is widely known, the issue of body donation is known to a minimum number of insiders. Yet at the Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University alone, dozens of donors sign a donation contract every year during their lifetime. They undertake that after their death their body will serve us, medics and doctors, for the purposes of teaching, science and research.
We do not know the motives of the donors, which may be different, nor do we know the names of these „silent teachers“. However, we are well aware of the magnitude of their decision and that each donor has a story to tell. Therefore, since 2018, we pay tribute to them with an annual commemoration during the All Saints´ Eve. Because while the remains of some donors are taken up by their survivors after cremation, others are scattered anonymously in a designated meadow in the cemetery. However, we are convinced that they deserve a more dignified final resting place.
We know well that this is not an easy topic to grasp.
We have already encountered the opinion „why should I contribute to the dead when I can contribute to someone alive here and now“. We get it. But when we consider how many future physicians a single donor´s body will serve and how many patients that physician will serve over the course of his or her lifetime, one donor can impact the lives of up to 10 million patients. Without most of us realizing it when we visit the doctor, in the end we all benefit from such a gift.
We therefore believe that body donors deserve a more dignified send-off and for this reason we have decided to build a memorial in their honour. It will serve not only to house their remains, but also as a final resting place where we, and others, can honor them with a silent memorial. As a symbol of their gift, which for many is unimaginable.
