The long-term collection is organized by the non-profit organization EPICANA z.ú., which aims to help children and adults with the neurological disease of epilepsy and organize cultural and educational events to support people with epilepsy. The non-profit organization was founded by the parents of the patient Elen, who suffers from a severe form of epilepsy – Dravet syndrome.
EPICANA organizes a successful summer „epicamp“ every year for families of children with epilepsy and other neurological problems. The epicamp has a tradition of several years and every year all participants leave full of energy and a lot of wonderful experiences. They will organize also „epi-ski weekend“ for the fourth time at the beginning of next year. Families with a child who suffers from a serious epileptic syndrome, such as Dravet syndrome, are going on this 4days stay. Epicana decided to support families with this serious disease, to treat children to winter fun and to let parents experience time in the mountains in the same way as parents of healthy children do.
“If there is a sick child in the family, the whole family is sick.” The events we are organising bring together entire families, including sick children and their healthy siblings, so we can literally help the entire family. We also help families with newly diagnosed patients, because the beginnings of any illness are very difficult and finding information on the Internet is not always enough. Experiences, advice and tips from families who have been living and fighting with this illness for a long time are better.
Part of the help is also educating the general public, because there are different types of epilepsy that are neglected and belittled or simply not that well known. We aim to organize events for the public and thus raise awareness of different types of epilepsy, for example, through first aid demonstrations, discussions with neurologists and parents of sick children.
The money will be used to organize educational and cultural events and meetings throughout the year – for example, an epi-ski weekend, where sick and healthy children would learn to ski as their health allows, or try out monoskiing, or just enjoy winter fun like healthy children. The collected amount would cover the cost of an instructor and the rental of equipment for these activities, or accommodation for sick children for families who cannot afford similar activities.
For many families, any additional expense is impossible. Usually, because of a sick child, parents cannot work fully, and thus lose a significant part of their financial income. From the care contributions, they pay for expensive rehabilitation and other services not covered by health insurance (e.g. assistance service). In this way, we could give many families extraordinary experiences and the opportunity to meet other families with a similar fate.
Our goal, together with your help, is to put a smile on children's faces and allow them to experience as many nice experiences as possible. Thank you.
