Help for Michaela: studies, treatment, and a dignified life despite illness
Introducing the Collection
Hello,
My name is Michaela Sladká, I am 39 years old, and I am from Brno. For the past three years, I have been studying theology at a prestigious university abroad, specifically at KU Leuven’s Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, which is among the world’s leading institutions. I am a musician—I compose music and write lyrics, play the guitar, piano, and drums—and I love Lego. I have been involved in sports since childhood; I played soccer and floorball competitively. I lead an active life and am never afraid of a challenge. My motto is: “You can forget yourself, but not others.” That is why I have long been involved in the humanities, social work, and working as a counselor at a diagnostic institute.
In my free time, I’ve helped young people as a psychological and spiritual mentor. Much of my experience stems from real life—from a time when health issues forced me to change the course of my life. Unfortunately, a few years ago, I received a serious diagnosis that brought me to a halt: I went from being an active person to someone dependent on the help of others.
Who can we help?
In 2019, I was diagnosed with melanoma (skin cancer). This was followed by a series of other health complications—autoimmune and neurological issues, other cancers, and what’s known as paraneoplastic syndrome, in which the immune system fighting the cancer attacks the nervous system. This causes loss of balance, muscle weakness, and occasional falls. However, what complicates my life the most is unbearable pain, which we partially manage with medication, including opioids.
Due to these health limitations, my mobility has become very difficult—everyday activities, such as walking to the bathroom or preparing food, are often impossible. Doctors recommend daily rehabilitation and special aids to prevent muscle atrophy—such as an exercise bike, rehabilitation machines, or a mobility scooter. A wheelchair would mean a rapid deterioration of my physical condition, so I try to avoid it for as long as possible.
Financially, the situation is critical. Neither the government nor my insurance covers all costs, and as a foreigner in Belgium, I don’t have access to full benefits. I have to pay:
- rent of 705 euros/month (including utilities, internet, and water),
- tuition and materials (approx. 200 euros/year + books, printing, and notebooks),
- medications and partial coverage for medical exams,
- transportation to the doctor by taxi, which is often the only option,
- rehabilitation aids and exercise equipment,
- basic household and hygiene supplies.
In addition, I strive to continue living a meaningful life—studying, staying active, and helping others—but without financial support, I wouldn’t be able to cover even my basic expenses, let alone focus on my studies and the projects I have planned.
What exactly will the money from this fundraiser be used for?
The money from the fundraiser will be used for:
- Housing and basic expenses – rent, utilities, internet, personal hygiene, food.
- Education – tuition, books, lecture notes, printing, notebooks, and possibly a printer for printing materials at home.
- Healthcare – medication, medical exams, physical therapy, and medical aids (e.g., exercise bike, physical therapy, mobility scooter).
- Daily life and transportation – taxis to doctor’s appointments and lectures, basic apartment furnishings.
I am not specifying a specific amount because I need the fundraiser to be flexible – whatever amount is raised, every contribution will allow me to survive and study without having to worry about whether I can pay rent, medication, or lunch.
Every bit of your support will not only allow me to continue my studies and life, but it will also give me the motivation to keep fighting. By contributing to this fundraiser, you’ll become part of my journey—a struggle for an active, meaningful, and independent life despite serious health limitations.
Thank you for your attention and any support you can offer.

Následovala řada dalších zdravotních komplikací – autoimunitní a neurologické obtíže, další nádorová onemocnění a tzv. paraneoplastický syndrom, kdy imunitní systém bojující proti rakovině napadá nervovou soustavu. To způsobuje ztrátu rovnováhy, svalové slabosti a občasné pády.
Lékaři mi doporučují denní rehabilitace a speciální pomůcky, aby nedošlo k atrofii svalů – například rotoped, rehabilitační stroje či skútr pro pohyb. Invalidní vozík by znamenal rapidní zhoršení fyzické kondice, proto se snažím mu co nejdéle vyhnout.
Finančně je situace kritická. Stát ani pojišťovna nepokrývají všechny náklady, a jako cizinka v Belgii nemám přístup k plné podpoře. Musím platit:
-
nájem kolem 800 eur/měsíc (včetně energií, internetu, vody),
-
poplatky za studium a materiály (cca 200 eur/rok + knihy, tisk, sešity),
-
léky a částečné úhrady vyšetření,
-
dopravu k lékaři taxíkem, který je často jedinou možností,
-
rehabilitační pomůcky a cvičební zařízení,
-
