Podobně jako na dalších místech v africké Keni, i ve vesnici Bwayi místní rodiny v posledních letech potrápila nebývale dlouhá sucha, nepředvídatelné deště a bídné sklizně. Místní lidé jsou zcela závislí na tom, co vypěstují, a tak citelně vnímají výkyvy počasí a změny klimatu. Nouze některé lidi bohužel dovedla ke kácení stromů k výrobě dřevěného uhlí pro drobný výdělek. Nemálo stromů v okolí padlo také kvůli rozšiřování zemědělské půdy.

As in other places in Kenya, local families in the village of Bwayi have been hit by unusually long droughts, unpredictable rains and poor harvests in recent years. The local people are totally dependent on what they grow, and so feel the effects of weather fluctuations and climate change acutely. Sadly, poverty has led some people to cut down trees to produce charcoal for small-scale income. Many trees in the area have also fallen due to the expansion of agricultural land.

S místním komunitním spolkem Niaver, jež ve vesnici působí již osm let, chceme dopadům změn klimatu, úbytku stromů v krajině a tíživé životní situaci rodin v Bwayi čelit mimo jiné založením stromové školky– pěstováním stromků, jejich sázením a distribucí. Přičemž klademe důraz nejen na sázení, ale také na péči o zasazené stromky. Dva tisíce stromů chceme pěstovat přímo ve vesnici, na farmě Niaver a v okolí. Další tisíce sazenic poputují do okolních oblastí.

With the local community organization Niaver, which has been active in the village for eight years, we want to address the impacts of climate change, the loss of trees in the landscape and the hardship of families in Bwayi by, among other things, establishing a tree nursery- growing trees, planting and distributing them. In doing so, we place emphasis not only on the planting but also on the care of the planted trees. We want to grow two thousand trees right in the village, at Niaver Farm and in the surrounding area. Thousands more seedlings will go to the surrounding areas.

Niaver Community Based Organisation stojí na pevném odhodlání týmu dobrovolníků se silnou vírou v ekologické zemědělství a komunitní sdílení. Podporuje ženy v udržitelných přístupech k půdě a k produkci zeleniny, pěstování lokálních plodin a sdílení semínek a sazenic. Na farmu Niaver se ženy přicházejí učit o pěstování, sdílí spolu své zkušenosti a pečují o políčka. V tomto roce se povedlo otevřít i malou školku se dvěma třídami pro místní děti. Školka nejenže poskytuje základ vzdělání 80 znevýhodněným dětem, také matky dětí získaly čas pro sebe, svá zaměstnání či práci na polích. Na farmě Niaver pěstujeme zeleninu, chováme slepice, vyrábíme cihly a experimentujeme s rybařením. Projekt stromové školky je dalším krokem k udržitelnosti dlouhodobých aktivit dobrovolnického spolku Niaver.

Niaver Community Based Organization is built on the strong commitment of a team of volunteers with a strong belief in organic farming and community sharing. It supports women in sustainable approaches to land and vegetable production, growing local crops and sharing seeds and seedlings. The women come to Niaver Farm to learn about growing, share their experiences with each other and care for the fields. This year Niaver has also managed to open a small nursery with two classes for local children. The nursery not only provides a basic education for 80 disadvantaged children, the mothers of the children have also got time for themselves, their jobs or working in the fields. At Niaver Farm we grow vegetables, raise chickens, make bricks and experiment with fishing. The tree nursery project is another step towards the sustainability of Niaver's long-term activities.
