The First Album That Is Really Mine
I have recorded a number of albums with all kinds of bands. Now I'm finally making one that's entirely my own: a solo album with some of my own compositions, too. We've got it all planned out. The only piece missing is where I need you to get involved, too. :-) You know what is coming, so let me tell you a bit about my project.
I am recording my first solo album. It is called The Way I Am, and for the first time, it's my own: my world, my sound, my songs.
I have been drifting from genre to genre, learning them all. And have never been able to stick to just one. None of the usual labels define me. I have always felt that the true voice of my music is still waiting to be heard; I just haven't had enough time to let it shine. Now's the time.
On my album, Middle Eastern and Balkan melodies meet with jazz, original music and a some Moravian flair. Nothing pre-fabricated about it. That's the way I am. And on December 20, we'll be throwing a release party at Jazz Dock in Prague.
Who exactly is behind this project?
I sing, play, compose, and teach. I've lived and breathed music since childhood: growing up at home with my trad-jazz dad Stařena and my composer brother Varhan, it couldn't have been any other way.
You might know me from the a cappella group Skety, with whom I've been singing for over ten years and winning awards all over the world. There are many other options where we could have met: the bebop group Bohemia After Dark, the swing group Hot Sisters, Jan Kořínek's Groove blues band, the 1920's jazz Original Prague Syncopated Orchestra, the experimental Hlaskontrabas Oktet – the fusion duo Nebula, where I also work on jazz with Middle Eastern inspirations. Or perhaps we have met at a concert of my brother Varhan where I played the piano or sang? Or at one of my workshops, be it choral or modal? It does not really matter.
I studied linguistics and phonetics at Charles University in Prague and have been learning Persian for years. I approach music traditions through language. I've also organized modal music jam sessions for some time now, so I am finally involved in regionally distant music that has been haunting me ever since I can remember.
On the album, I am joined by fantastic musicians whose presence thrills me: Jakub Tököly on piano, Tomáš Liška on double bass (this year's Anděl Award winner), and Marek Urbánek on drums. Andy Schofield, the artistic director of the Jazz Dock Orchestra, is writing the arrangements for the Epoque Quartet and the woodwind section, while our other guests will provide the authentic Middle Eastern sound. As soon as we reach the third milestone, you will find out who they are!
Then, in September, we will record the album at SONO Studio with Adam Karlík.
How will we use the funds we have raised?
I have already finalized and arranged for everything—the band, the arrangements, the studio, and the release date. The only thing missing is the final piece: the funds to produce the album and get it to you.
Let me be blunt: this entire album actually costs around 400 000 CZK. We are raising half of that from other sources, which my partner, conductor and producer Lukáš Prchal, and I are working on. I am asking you here for the other half, 200 000 CZK. It will go toward the most important things: recording, sound, and album production.
The donio fundraiser is essentially a subscription. When you contribute, you are not just buying the album, you're helping to bring it into existence and also becoming a part of it. Your names will be in the booklet, you will hear the music before anyone else does, and you will be at the release concert. Without you, the whole thing will not happen.

A friend of mine and a brilliant madman, Maestro LuLu, has built his own record-cutting machine. He cuts every copy in real time: he sits at the machine and watches the groove the whole time the music plays. The record holds a selection from the album, plays on any ordinary turntable, and I'll throw in a CD as well so you don't miss any of the songs. The sleeve of each copy is hand-cut, glued, painted, and signed by Barbora Pavlišová, who paints the album's artwork. Seventeen originals in the whole world, numbered, signed by me, by Bára, and by Maestro LuLu.
