About the Story
The story is about Niels Bohr, a Danish physicist during World War II. The narrative begins with Bohr fleeing to England due to Nazi occupation in Denmark. At 50 years old, Bohr arrives in England and moves to a secluded house away from the city. There, he meets two bodyguards who act as his protectors, allowing him to continue his research. The bodyguards' care for a bird's egg symbolizes how a small touch can have dangerous consequences for the world.
The story revolves around flashbacks of Bohr working with his student, Werner Heisenberg. Bohr serves as a mentor, and we witness their growing friendship and mutual enjoyment of their
scientific discoveries and research. However, Albert Einstein enters the scene, challenging Bohr's theory, which brings Bohr back to the present, feeling frustrated and unable to write or focus on his research, feeling increasingly lonely.
Lise Meitner appears in a flashback, writing a letter to Bohr, explaining that she has found a way to further expand the knowledge of atomic energy. A young Black courier takes the letter but is shot on his way, and the letter is stolen, eventually reaching Werner Heisenberg.
Back in the present, Bohr receives the devastating news that the USA has bombed Hiroshima. At this moment, the egg is shown crushed on the ground, symbolizing the catastrophic effects of the
atomic bomb. The story concludes with a vision of the aftermath of the nuclear bomb in Hiroshima, reflecting Bohr's profound realization of the consequences of their scientific advancements.
