My bojujeme s ní a děláme všechno proto, aby tu s námi mohla být co nejdéle.
EN – Who Are You Helping? – Our Story
We started this fundraiser for our beloved mom, Jana, who is 56 years old. She has always been a happy, cheerful, and strong woman who loves going for walks, attending concerts and theater, cycling, traveling, and spending time with us. Now, she’s showing her strength more than ever.
In June of this year (2024), our lives were turned upside down. It started subtly but progressed rapidly – our mom wasn’t feeling well, her blood pressure was elevated, her vision deteriorated, and she began bumping into things.
An eye exam revealed she had completely lost peripheral vision in her left eye, and a CT scan showed swelling in her brain. Instead of going on vacation – which was canceled just hours before departure – she had to undergo further tests. An MRI revealed a brain tumor.
Two weeks later, she underwent surgery. The tumor was successfully removed, and we waited six long weeks for the histology results. Unfortunately, we received the worst possible diagnosis – high-risk glioblastoma grade IV, the most aggressive type of brain tumor, which nearly always recurs. The statistical prognosis for survival is extremely low.
Our mom is fighting bravely. She has completed radiotherapy and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. However, these treatments are not a cure in the true sense; they merely delay the inevitable. We are fighting alongside her and doing everything we can to ensure she can stay with us as long as possible.
We cannot imagine that this might be our last Christmas together. That she might not be there for our weddings, graduations, or to hold her grandchildren one day. This makes us value every single donation, which gives us immense hope.
To make matters worse, we had to deal with an issue involving a defective batch of chemotherapy medication. The Czech State Institute for Drug Control (SÚKL) recalled the batch because some capsules in the packaging may have been less effective. This means our mom may not have received the full dose of treatment, making it even more crucial to start treatment with the Optune device as soon as possible.
How Will Your Donation Help?
The funds raised will go towards the Optune TTF device (Tumor Treating Fields), which offers a real chance to extend life.
“Optune (TTF) is a treatment that uses low-intensity electric fields to disrupt cancer cell growth. The patient wears a special ‘cap’ with electrodes on their head, which generates these fields. These fields target tumor cells, preventing them from growing and dividing.”
This treatment is not yet covered by health insurance in the Czech Republic. We have submitted a request for coverage under Section 16 of Act No. 48/1997 Coll., on Public Health Insurance. However, our initial request was denied, and while we continue to appeal, time is running out.
That’s why we are turning to you, dear donors. This treatment is extremely costly, with one month of wearing this special “cap” costing €21,000 + VAT.
The more funds we can raise, the longer our mom can use this device, and the longer she can stay with us.
This fundraiser is dedicated to financing treatment with the Optune (TTF) device. The funds will be used to cover the costs of acquiring and operating this device, as well as other treatment expenses related to this therapy and any additional supportive therapies that could improve her condition.
Given the nature of the disease, we realize we need to try everything possible. For this reason, we also plan to use the funds for any other potential treatments or related expenses that might arise if a new option emerges that could improve our mom’s condition or extend her life.
The funds will also be used to cover any additional costs associated with treatment.
We would also like to take this opportunity to express our heartfelt thanks to the doctors and medical staff who are taking excellent care of our mom, as well as everyone who has helped us during this difficult time.
Dear donors, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you for any contribution. You are giving us the chance to spend more time with our beloved mom.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Daughters Tereza and Kateřina
