Iraqi Kurdistan is a land of a thousand and one stories. For centuries, Muslims, Christians, Jews, Yazidis, Sabians-Mandaeans, Zoroastrians, and Kaka’is have lived here together…
But this is not merely a testimony to a distant corner of the Orient. The exhibition shows that dialogue between different people is not only possible but even enriching.
Photographer Lam Duc Hien returned to Iraqi Kurdistan for more than thirty years, gaining access to mystical Sufi ceremonies, to temples where Aramaic is still spoken, to the first Shabbat with a rabbi in decades, and to the mysterious community of Kakaists—men with large mustaches…
Who is behind the project?
French-Laotian photographer Lam Duc Hien first traveled to Iraqi Kurdistan in 1991 as a humanitarian worker. He later returned to the region as a war correspondent. He has worked for Le Monde, The New York Times, NZZ, GEO, and numerous other international media outlets. He is represented by the Vu Agency in Paris. He won first prize at the World Press Photo contest for his portraits of Iraqis.

The printing house and team, who is ready to install the whole exhibition.
The largest item in our budget is the printing of large-format photographs for outdoor use. We plan to print up to 70 photographs in sizes of 170 × 115 cm and 180 × 120 cm.
Each photograph must have a special hanging system so that it can be installed directly on a tree. This involves a combination of a commercially available frame and a handcrafted hanging mechanism.
Each photograph must have captions in multiple languages.
Six people will install and dismantle the exhibition.
We are preparing promotional materials, posters, and a festive opening reception.
